Prior to discovering Cecilian Dang’s roots, I described her latest EP as having the soulful twang of a seasoned R&B artist, which later clicked when I learned she is Nashville native. There’s a soft sensibility to her lyricism which isn’t hardened by NYC—where Dang studied and is currently based out of. Instead, it has only seemed to amplify her vulnerability.
That vulnerability is put on display in her “I SPY” inspired music video for “Don’t Wanna Say Good Night!”. This isn’t some surface level farming of ’90s era nostalgia. It’s an attempt to be seen.
It’s as though she is trying to cut through all of the games, and have a moment of directness where she finally can wear her heart on her sleeve.
The rest of the EP is equally as good and heartfelt. Highly recommend!
