It has been over five years since Manila Folders was last updated. (I’ve missed it dearly.)
In those years I, not too infrequently, would find myself coming back here. Randomly clicking on folders. Trying to see if I could find something I once shared. And without fail, I would stumble across a folder of music I had forgotten about.
And I’d be reminded of why I made this in the first place. And why I am so adament about maintaining a format that is difficult to navigate or search.
While there is an element of intentional friction I have come to enjoy, Manila Folders has become a space for leisured serendipity. A place to sit around and rummage.
So welcome back. I’m happy to have you here.
There’s a familiarity to the sound of this. But not in a derivative sense. Nor nostalgic.
Perhaps this feelin of deja vu comes from romanticizing my trailer of summer—montaging together images of stealing 7-eleven slurpees, running through fields, and skateboarding home with a bag full of groceries while this song plays in the background.
It’s incredible watching an artist start to blow up in real time. I came across earthsignchels a few weeks ago when they had under 30K monthly listeners and at the time of writing this are north of 115K.
Her On The Radar performance is electrifying, and her recent release, “Daddy Died”, is haunting and captivating. Keep an eye on her.
